Favorite Things Friday

One of my absolute favorite things is a binder filled with lined paper, dividers, cover pages, labels. This binder contains all the useful bits of information that I need to refer to.  Schedules, medical information, all those goodies that I need a physical copy of in one place so I'm not running around the house wasting time hunting them up.

Since I developed mom brain (and a recurring need for a nap) I can hardly remember what I want to remember, let alone where I may have put something.  It doesn't matter what it is; paper, (mine, Hubs, the girls'), an object (my purse, the diaper bag, Turtle's school bag) or a piece of information (medical insurance papers). The second I neeed to do something with it, is the second it grows legs and scurries off to the lost sock dimension.

When I found Fly Lady, I was introduced to Control Journals. As with everything else Fly Lady I adapted it to work for me. 'So smart,' I thought, 'bet no one else has done this!'

To my great delight, when I just was not happy with my control journal, I found a plethora of blogs with their own versions of control journals.

Toni  had a household notebook as her first weekly organizing challenge.

Yay! More household notebooks to browse!

Amanda posted a huge list of links to printable!

I love Denise's binder.

I could go on and on. If you are looking for some household notebook inspiration click over to Toni's and check the binder post for more links.

Tackle It Tuesday - Feb 8

On Saturday I went a little crazy, spurred on by the recurring nightmare that is my pantry, I hauled every dang thing out of the girls' closet.  After I hauled every dang thing out of the pantry.

Yes, it was not a very good idea to rearrange/organize two rooms at the same time.  Especially when I underestimated Frog's reaction to a newly arranged bedroom (the tears! the screaming!).  Yes, I did have to reset their room.

Totally NOT the before. The nice and tidy after.
Turtle's hiding place for the Frog unfriendly toys AKA choking hazards.

The 'new' pantry set up.

Once again I can see the pantry floor along with all the other items I need to add to my todo list.  Such as buy baskets and labels and get rid of that half unassembled folding screen.

Pantry? Tackled! Again.

Girls' closet? Tackled!

Tackle It Tuesday - Nothing But (under) the Bathroom Sink

Yesterday, I just couldn't take it anymore.  The unlabelled baskets, pulling multiple baskets out to get the one that was at the back of the cupboard.

Under my bathroom sink was a bit nasty cluttery mess!  So I tackled it.  I even yanked out the particle board 'shelf' that was shedding paper and board filling all over the cupboard.  Now it's sitting in the bathroom leaning against the wall. I need SOMETHING for AP Wednesday!

So here it is, in all it's newly organized still unlabelled glory!

Doors of Doom (I totally would never choose that hardware)
Ahhhh. Organized Bliss.
What's that? You want to see INSIDE the drawers?  Well, if I must.

Turtle & Frog's hair stuff drawer.

Mommy's hair stuff drawer.
The only thing that's in the bottom drawer at the moment is my stockpile of orangewood cuticle sticks. Yes. I live an exciting life!  Full of nail care accessories.

Menu Plan Monday - Jan 24th

I made it easy on myself this week and remembered to use an Excel document I found for planning my menu.  It took me all of 5 minutes!  It helped that I found some stuff on sale at the grocery store that I actually FELT like making!

Monday cereal C – sandwiches

pasta apple slices, yogurt thaw bacon
Tuesday Toast & fruit leftover pasta french toast & bacon grapes, goldfish thaw soup, make banana bread

Saturday family FFA pizza FFA thaw pork chops, precook potatoes
Sunday FFA FFA pork chops, twice baked potatoes, corn FFA

Would you like some recipes?  Here you go!

Easy Vegetable Minestrone - I got this from Recipezaar* in 2009. We all love it! Except Turtle, she's not a big fan of the beans.  I am not a fan of pesto, so I add the leafy bits of a fresh bunch of parsley. I love how it looks!

Baked Pork Chops - another Recipezaar recipe. We all love this one. You can use dijon honey mustard as your prepared mustard too. Caution - this makes a LOT! We divide it in half for our family of four.

Now for some family recipes!

Baking Powder Biscuits
Preheat oven to 450F
2 cups flour    4 tsp baking powder    1/2 tsp salt    4 tbsp shortening (I use margarine or butter)   milk
1. Sift dry ingredients together.  Cut in margarine**
2.  Add enough milk to form a soft dough.
3. Roll out dough and form rough balls (my gramma always used a glass to cut them out)
4. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown

Easy Banana Bread
Preheat oven to 350F
1/3 cup melted shortening    3/4 cup sugar    2 overripe (I freeze them, so they go BLACK) bananas, diced
1 egg    2 cups flour    1 tsp baking powder    1/2 tsp baking soda    1 tsp salt    3/4 cup milk    1 tsp vanilla extract
1. Grease loaf pans
2. Mix wet and dry ingredients separately
3. Alternately mix the wet and dry ingredients together in a large bowl until the mixture is smooth
4. Pour the batter into the loaf pans and bake for 1 hour or until brown

I'm linking up over at Organizing Junkie's.

*Yes, Recipezaar is now food.com. I like using Recipezaar better!
**Best way to cut in margarine/butter ever? Use the largest holes on your box cheese grater! Goodbye pastry cutter!

Nothing to see here

Or is there?!

It's been a week full of procrastination around here.  One thing has led to another and now it's Thursday!

So here's some catch up for you

On Thursday!

I printed out one of Get Organized Wizard's menu printables*, I love that it lets me plan out breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I'm going to do a display version of this for myself.

Laura posted this link on January 10th's Menu Plan Monday. I found this awesome idea to use up one of the cork boards I have hiding in my pantry at the moment. Now to see if I have the ribbon and such to make my own version (in green and blue of course!).

So far this week we've eaten pita pizzas, creamy cheeseburger macaroni, waffles and bacon.
Thursday (today!) - scrambled eggs and toast
Friday - spaghettini and meat sauce
Saturday - pizza buns, we're going to switch up the toppings for this one, basically our regular pita pizza toppings on buns

Yeah, still Thursday!

Monday night I had Turtle completely empty out her art & craft shelf in our linen closet. She threw out a full shopping bag full of papers and mostly used notebooks. We added some more papers to her bags to scan and post here.

Well, now I'm only a day behind!

Have you seen Awesome Note? You should try it! I tried the Lite version, then I saw what I could do with the full version and bought it for my iPod**.  I love that I don't need to clutter up my planner with multiple post-it notes now! I could use Awesome Note for appointments and scheduling as well, but honestly, sometimes I really love my pen and paper!

*I won this  in November of 2009 from one of Laura's Round-Ups.

**I paid full price for this from Apple's App store. I love the App store.

Menu Jan 9 - 15

Breakfast is the usual; cereal or toast with fruit, a family breakfast on Saturday and everybody fending for themselves on Sunday.  Hopefully this week I'll manage to actually make the family breakfast. Turtle having the flu most of last week kinda put paid to anything big happening food wise.

Lunch is gonna be pretty simple again. Turtle will be at school all week (I hope!) so she'll have her usual array of snacks to choose from. Hubs has sandwich ingredients. Frog and I will eat up some fruit, yogurt and some other goodies we have waiting for us.

Dinner
Sunday - we made pita pizzas again. We are all LOVING these, it means we can have pizza every weekend!
Monday - minestrone
Tuesday - pasta
Wednesday - pancakes
Thursday - scrambled eggs with cheese, home fries (still in the freezer, Turtle will actually be up to eating them this week)
Friday - lasagna
Saturday - pita pizzas again, and that will finish off the pitas we have in the freezer!

Due to the snow we got on Saturday night, everybody was at the store yesterday and by the time we got there, they were OUT of milk, carrots, AND yogurt.  Not the usual thing for our grocery store! I am going to have to bundle up and head out the grab the rest of our list. I need to start the soup soon!

Menu Plan Monday

Breakfast is back to the usual; cereal or toast with fruit, a family breakfast on Saturday and everybody fending for themselves on Sunday.

Lunch has been figured out for Turtle for her first four days back after Christmas break. Hubs has sandwich ingredients for a few days, then he needs to scour the pantry.  Frog and I will eat up whatever's left over.

Since I am having a wisdom tooth extraction on Tuesday this is going to be a very soft food week.  I learned my lesson from last time, no dry socket for this momma again!

Dinner
Sunday - we made pita pizzas, Hubs was impressed. As usual, making pizza sauce is the easiest thing ever.
Monday - sweet & sour meatballs, rice and carrots
Tuesday - soup & grilled cheese
Wednesday - pasta
Thursday - scrambled eggs with ham and cheese, home fries (these are already made, I just need to remember to defrost them!)
Friday - ham, baked potatoes, carrots (I got them on deal this week!)
Saturday - pasta

Menu Plan Tuesday!

Thanks to Google, my printer issue of last week was solved! Now if only it could give me more energy on Monday evenings that I work!

Breakfast is the usual with one small change; cereal or toast with fruit, a family breakfast on Sunday and everybody fending for themselves on Saturday as it's Christmas and I'll be making a big dinner.

Lunch was figured out, Hubs has sandwich ingredients for work and we added a few more things to the pantry so he has choices for lunch.

Dinner
Monday - pasta
Tuesday - shake & bake chicken (I've got 3 packages left, then I'll find a recipe!), baked potatoes and peaches and cream corn
Wednesday - tortellini soup and baking powder biscuits
Thursday - lasagna
Friday - pancakes & breakfast sausage
Saturday - Christmas dinner! Baked ham, scalloped potatoes, honey glazed carrots and apple crisp with ice cream for dessert
Sunday - leftovers, free for all, whatever anyone wants to make for themselves, I'm off cooking duty!

I'm linking up to Menu Plan Monday at Org Junkie.  Merry Christmas to all and to all a merry menu plan!

(Ok, that last part was hokey)

Menu Plan Monday - Dec 13th

Here's another whoops from my last MPM post - I've been forgetting to link back to Org Junkie for the Linky!  So I'm going to try and remember to make the image a link!

Christmas is rapidly approaching and I am so glad that I've been doing menu plans each month at a time. Sure, the menu changes a few times but I only need to copy it out for the month to the fridge sheet so everyone can see what's coming up this week.  Which makes me especially happy as this morning, when I was printing out this week's sheet, my printer died! I can't get it to turn on, Hubs can't get it to turn on, we're pretty sure it's just dead.  I think that means that Boxing Day we'll be out shopping for a printer!

Now, on to the menu plan!

Breakfast is the usual; cereal or toast with fruit, a family breakfast on the weekend and everybody fending for themselves on Sunday.

Lunch needs to be worked on since the leftovers I've been saving for Hubs have been rapidly disappearing at dinner the night before since the girls are eating so much! I'm sure they are both growing again (like always!).

Dinner
Monday - spaghetti and garlic bread
Tuesday - waffles and breakfast sausage
Wednesday - tomato soup and savoury grilled cheese
Thursday - three cheese tortellini and marinara sauce
Friday - fish & chips - we discovered a new type of fish that we are LOVING
Saturday - tacos
Sunday - shake & bake chicken (I need to find a better recipe for this!), baked potatoes and peaches and cream corn

Menu Plan Monday Nov 29 - Dec 6

Two weeks ago we tried doing a grocery trip for two weeks.  Which went well until Friday when we were out of a bunch of basics AND grocery money.  I decided to go back to once a week.  We really need the fresh fruit for Turtle and Frog, plus I've gotten used to having some to munch on when I'm feeling too lazy to cook!

Here's this week's menu including snacks and lunch for Turtle.

Breakfast;
Monday, Wednesday, Friday - cereal and fruit for everyone,
Tuesday and Thursday - toast and fruit for everyone,
Saturday - I make pancakes, waffles or eggs for everyone to eat together,
Sunday - everybody feed themselves, whatever they want.

Lunch - planned out mainly so I can make lunches without thinking about them during the week;
Monday - meat and cheese 'platter' - my thrift version of lunchables, this always gets devoured when I send it to school.
Tuesday - leftover pasta.
Wednesday - 1/2 a bakery cheese bun.
Thursday - leftover soup.
Friday -  1/2 bagel with cream cheese.
Saturday and Sunday are always open for suggestion, it depends on if Hubs or I are working.

Snacks - watermelon, mandarin oranges, red seedless grapes, air popped popcorn, yogurt, and giant goldfish crackers.

Planning that out for a whole week took a LOT of time.  I am planning on modifying the spreadsheet I shared a few menu plans ago so I don't have to keep track of all the choices in my head.

Hey! What's for dinner!?

Dinner;
Monday - pasta,
Tuesday - french toast and bacon, gotta have me some bacon!
Wednesday - tomato soup and grilled cheese,
Thursday - 3 cheese tortellini with marinara sauce and garlic bread,
Friday - shake & bake chicken, dry roast potatoes and peaches and cream corn,
Saturday - noodle night, this is basically a fancy version of ramen. Yes, ramen! We add shrimp, celery, carrots, and green onions to it.  One of these days I'll find a recipe for wonton stock and use that instead of the ramen base packages.
Sunday - Nachos, by Turtle's special request.

I think I've got it this time. That's what I get for blogging before I've even had my morning tea.

November 15, 2010

MPM - Nov 15 - Nov 21

Monday - Baked pork chops, baked potatoes and honey glazed carrots

Tuesday - Cheese tortellini with marinara sauce

Wednesday - fish & fries

Thursday - minestrone & garlic bread

Friday - spaghetti

Saturday - noodle night

Sunday - chicken wings & fries

Menu Plan Monday with a link and a recipe!

I really, REALLY don't like meal planning.  It creates the extra work for me of having to write out an actual grocery list and actually MAKE the meals I plan.  On the flip side I can't STAND the 4pm "what do you mean I have to COOK? FOOD!?"

To make the menu planning easier I set off to find a spreadsheet so I wouldn't have to do much (if any) typing once I set it up!  I had success not once, but twice at Vertex. Using the monthly menu planning template, planning for all of October took me maybe 20 minutes! Easy peasy! Now if only I could fit lunch and breakfast on there as well!

So here's this week's menu with a recipe for you!

Monday - Happy Thanksgiving all you Canucks! We're having pizza all day here in the NT2N house

Tuesday - Spaghetti and garlic bread! Yum yum!

Wednesday - Minestrone and baking powder biscuits! Gonna make a double batch for next week while I'm at it

Thursday - Breakfast for dinner day! Omelettes, toast and bacon

Friday - Pasta again, we're some pasta fiends in this house! Frog even had a few handfuls for the first time last week!

Saturday - Tacos! Another family favourite for the fall

Sunday - Chicken pot pies and steamed rice. One of my favourite meals to make! So quick!

August 09, 2010

Menu Plan Monday

I've actually been doing my menu starting for Saturday or Sunday, basing it on the day we go grocery shopping. We've switched from going once every two weeks to going every Saturday. Not ideal, but we are able to have more fresh fruit/veggies this way during the summer. When school starts back up next month we'll likely back to the once every two weeks routine.

Monday - turkey, ham and bacon sandwiches

Tuesday - sweet and sour meatballs, rice and peaches and cream corn

Wednesday - spaghettini with beef marinara sauce

Thursday - scrambled eggs & hash browns

Friday - burgers, hot off the BBQ!

Saturday - pasta, maybe with cherry tomatoes and some fresh herbs

Sunday - BBQ chicken, rice and corn or broccoli

While Monday through Friday is set, the weekend is undecided due to me working both days and Hubs cooking.

Snacks for me and the girls will be cantaloupe, grapes, granola bars, bananas, rice rusks (for Frog) and yogurt (for Turtle).

June 15, 2010

Menu Plan Monday - Ooops! It's Tuesday!

It's been a crazy first half of June between one thing and another.  I've been writing blog posts in my head but not managing to get them up.

So here's a simple one for you!

Monday - spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread

Tuesday - pita pizzas Turtle gets cheese for toppings, Hubs gets pepperoni, peppers, onions, tomatoes and bacon, I get tomatoes and bacon

Wednesday - pasta w/ meat sauce

Thursday - french toast

Friday - pasta w/ meat sauce

Saturday - bar nachos - white corn tortilla chips, diced green and red pepppers, onions, taco flavoured ground beef

Sunday - BBQ baked chicken, rice and peaches and cream corn
